The Way of Christian Victory

Psalm 37:1-11

One of the early lessons we are taught in life is the spirit of competition and the drive to win. Every one of us wants to know victory, whether it is in a simple board game, on the athletic field, or in business. Certainly, this is true of the Christian experience. This is the most important element of life, and we do not want to fail here.

As we contemplate the way of victory in the Christian life, we must recognize that our competition or opposition is a strong force, indeed, the second strongest force in the world, Satan. But as Christians, we have the all-powerful God of the Universe to marshal resources behind us, enabling us to experience victory. By observing the principles set forth in Psalm 37, every Christian can live a successful Christian life. There are four key words in our text that set forth these principles for producing victory.

  • Trust in the Lord
    • What trust actually means
      • Not simply trusting Him for temporal needs
      • Putting our absolute trust and confidence in Jesus alone
        • What do I trust Him for? All things!
    • How that trust is accomplished in daily practice
      • Proverbs 3:5-6
        • Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
  • Commit yourself to the Lord
    • The meaning of the word “commit”
      • Entrust
        • Turn your life over to Christ
      • Pledge
        • Promise yourself to the Lord
      • Control
        • Let the Lord take control of your life
  • Delight self in the Lord
    • Please the Lord or make Him happy
    • Let the Lord make you happy
      • Philippians 4:11
        • I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
  • Rest in the Lord
    • Be at peace
    • Be satisfied with what the Lord gives
      • Luke 11:13
        •  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Therefore, every Christian can live the Christian life successfully by following these principles set forth to guide us.
