We have before us another of the Psalms of David. This is different from other Psalms because it was not written in the context of problems afflicting David, but rather from the standpoint of praise that comes from quiet reflection.
Probably this Psalm was written one night when David was relaxing under the starry heaven. This is logical from the standpoint of Psalm 8:3, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place.” As David reflects, his thoughts turn to two specific causes of praise.
- Praise for the greatness of God (Psalm 8:1-3)
- There is no other name above His
- “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
- There is no work mightier than His
- There is no other name above His
- Praise for God’s greatness expressed toward men (Psalm 8:4-8)
- Expressed in His consideration of man
- Man seems insignificant compared to the vastness of the universe
- God has given Him high honor
- He has elevated us to a place just below Himself
- Expressed in His consideration of man
We can conclude with David, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is thy name in all the earth!”
