John 11:1-43

One of the things we long for when we come to those inevitable trying times is support and encouragement as we pass through the fires of the experience. There are certain things we have to face, but knowing what someone understands and can help with is of great comfort.

John 11 shows us that Jesus is just such a person, and He can support us as we face trying times. The burden that is faced in this Scripture passage is loss through the death of a loved one, but while this shows us that Jesus is able to help us in these times, the support that He gives is not limited to times of sorrow but encompasses every experience we encounter.

• Jesus comforts through His person (John 11:3)
  • It was natural for the sisters to turn to Jesus
  • It is proper to turn to Him (Matthew 11:28)
  • We can share our needs
    • Here was a crisis
    • He is also available for lesser matters (Luke 10:38-42)
• Jesus comforts by His presence (John 11:20-25)
  • His presence gives strength
    • Both sisters were reassured when Jesus was there
      • There was complete confidence (John 11:22 & 32)
  • His presence reminds us of promises (John 11:23-27)
    • Promise of resurrection
      • They had a correct understanding, thus the promises meant something special
• Jesus comforts His own (John 11:38-44)
  • Jesus declares His power (John 11:25-26)
    • Jesus is the guarantee of the promise of resurrection because He said it
  • Jesus demonstrates His power (John 11:43)
    • The greatest demonstration is His resurrection (I Corinthians 15:20-26)

We can see clearly that Jesus brings comfort to our hearts as He supports us in trying times. Jesus is available for you and me, no matter what our need may be.
