How God Uses Nobodies

Joshua 2

One of the very serious problems that the Kingdom of God on earth faces is a prevalent spirit among many Christians that they are just “nobodies” and therefore have nothing to offer the Lord.

The hymn writer, Augustus Toplady, put it in these words, “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling” in “Rock of Ages“. It is indeed very true that we have nothing to offer our Lord in payment for our salvation, but it is equally true that He gives to us something that we can use for His Kingdom. He has given gifts to men for the purpose of service.

You may consider yourself a “nobody,” but God has gifted you for service. This leads us to the proposition that every person can share in God’s ultimate victory by serving Him. There are means by which we can achieve this service; thus, by taking advantage of the means provided, every person can share in the victory of God’s service.

There are means by which we can achieve this service; thus, by taking advantage of the means provided, every person can share in the victory of God’s service.

  • Availability
    • Joshua sent two men as spies
      • They presented themselves for service
        • These men were selected because they were qualified and available
      • They were submissive to leadership
        • Instructions were given to follow
      • The fruit of availability
        • They were anonymous
        • They are known for their great work
        • The victory at Jericho could have hinged upon the work they did
  • Accessibility
    • Rahab
      • Her infamy
        • Her reputation as a prostitute
      • Her act
        • Protected the men of God
        • Provided a means for their knowledge of what should take place for Jericho to fall
      • Her place
        • A hero of faith (Hebrews 11:31)
  • Accountability
    • The request was to spare her family
    • The agreement signified by the scarlet cord
    • The integrity
      • They might have taken the whole matter lightly
      • A vow was to be solemnly kept

Therefore, we see that every person can share in the victory of serving God. God can and does use nobodies. God used two unnamed men to help develop the strategy for a mighty victory. God used a woman of ill repute to provide a way for victory to come.

You may be obscure so far as having a household name goes, but God knows you and can use your abilities to further His work. Your background may or may not be colorful, but He is in the process of taking sinners and transforming them to become great jewels for His Kingdom by allowing them to serve a ministry for His glory.

Are you a “nobody”? Then you are just the person God is looking for.

Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” I Corinthians 1:26-31
