The Effect of the Law on Me Today

Romans 7

People often say we no longer live under the law but under grace. Praise God, this is true!

However, does this mean the law has no value to us today? Does it mean the law has fulfilled its purpose and is just one more obsolete thing in our world? Absolutely not! Romans 7 shows us that the law still has a function today.

  • The law reveals our sin
    • It shows what sin is (Romans 7:7)
      • It doesn’t cause sin, but shows us that our way is a way of sin
    • The law makes us conscious of sin (Romans 7:9)
      • Before the law, man lived with no sense of the power of sin, but when he learned the law, it made him conscious of his wrong and brought him to despair
  • The law shows our inadequacy
    • Shows the power that sin has over us (Romans 7:15)
      • Shows I am a slave to it (Romans 7:19-21)
    • Leads to a statement of (Romans 7:24)
      • What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
  • The law loses its grip
    • Death cancels the power of the law
    • This death gives way to a new life experience (Romans 7:4)

This does not mean we are free to sin; rather, we now have a higher power than the law as our standard.

When we serve Christ, we do not have to worry about the law because our love for Christ fulfills its principles.
