Grow in Grace

II Peter 3

The Bible is full of exhortations that the Christian should heed. One of them appears at the end of the wonderful third chapter of II Peter.

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. II Peter 3:18

This chapter presents many things for the Christian. It ends with a warning and an exhortation to grow in grace and knowledge.

  • What does it mean to grow in grace?
    • What is grace?
      • It is God’s work in our lives, which we have neither earned or deserved
    • How can we grow in grace?
      • Grow as a result of God’s grace
      • We can put ourselves in the place where God delights to show more of His grace in our lives daily
  • Know the deterrent to growth
    • Distortion of the Scriptures (II Peter 3:16-17)
    • Know the forces against which we do battle
      • “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12
    • Personal carelessness
  • Know the aids to growth
    • Strong adherence to the Scriptures
    • Personal faith in Jesus Christ
    • Close communion with the Lord in prayer
    • Working for the Lord

Why do we need this growth? Because Jesus is coming again, and it alone will guard us against the evil in our day so that we may be blameless in that day.
