“Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it.” Psalm 37:5
The word “way” is a very common expression used in Scripture, meaning the course of life. To name only a few of nearly 100 that use this phrase:
“He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the Lord: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.” Proverbs 14:2
“Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.” Proverbs 3:17
“Wait for the Lord and keep His way, and He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are eliminated, you will see it.” Psalm 37:34
With this understanding of the word “way,” we consider the course of life in total stewardship. There are several things revealed in this verse.
- Commit your way
- This is more than a casual encounter with Christ
When you became a Christian, you encountered Christ and committed yourself, desiring to be His follower. Sadly, we say that with many individuals, this is the first and only step. They are like the woman with the issue of blood who has touched the hem of God’s grace. Unlike her, they have not gone on to experience richness in Christ. They lack a deeper, more intimate experience with the Lord. This comes through spiritual maturity. Spiritual maturity comes when one follows the admonition to commit one’s way to the Lord.
Commitment of your way to the Lord is to say in effect, “Lord, I am giving over my entire way of life to you and am asking you to direct me and lead me into any and every experience that you desire.”
The Apostle Paul expressed his commitment with these words, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
In the context of our thinking of stewardship, this is a threefold commitment of our time, talent, and treasure.
- Activate your trust
- The object of trust is Christ
This means that our trust is to be centered in Christ. Our commitment is to Christ.
This implies that we will have confidence in Christ, not an individual, not the church, but Christ, so that what is done in the family, life, our work, and in the church, we have confidence in Christ’s ability to lead and provide.
- Activate your trust
- Through our obedience to the will of Christ
Jesus said, “You are my friends if you do what I command,” in John 15:14. This is trust put into action. In the realm of our stewardship, we will activate our trust in Christ by giving unto Him of our time, talent, and treasures.
Why are we so concerned with stewardship? Why is it necessary? Why is it so important?
It expresses our love for Christ. If the basis of stewardship is anything but love, the purpose is lost.
- Our love is expressed by
- Honoring the Lord
- Extending the work of the Kingdom
- Obedience to Christ
Stewardship is important to our spiritual growth. If you do little by way of stewardship, you will reap little by way of growth and blessing. The promise of Scripture is that if we commit our way and trust, He will bring our aims to pass.
