We come together today and celebrate Mother’s Day. Often, we use Mother’s Day as the basis of honoring our mothers and mentioning such women as Hannah, Lois, Eunice, or Mary. All very virtuous women. That is fine if you can identify with them, but what if you cannot?
Today, I want to draw on the experiences of other women to celebrate this Mother’s Day. Through them, we will see that every person can contribute to the Lord’s work.
- An unnamed woman in Luke (Luke 7:37)
- Immoral person
- Widely known reputation
- Quality of love (Luke 7:47)
- Immoral person
- Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:1-3)
- Cured of seven demons
- Her expression of love
- Along with a handful of other women were supporting Jesus’ ministry from their own means
- Rahab (Joshua 2)
- Her background
- Prostitute
- Her experience
- Hid the spies
- Advised the spies on how to elude the authorities
- Her faith
- Recognized how God worked for His children
- Interceded for her family to be spared
- Her background
As we have looked at these three women, we can identify them, at first glance, as ones we wouldn’t want to pattern our own lives after. But in each of them, we find qualities that can be developed and are qualities that give honor to God. Their reputations are widely known as sinful or immoral, but God worked for His glory, showcasing His mercy.
Do you see yourself as less than an ideal person to be used as an example on this day? Take courage, God can and does use any person who is willing to come to Him and allow Him to do His work in you for His own glory.
