The Majesty of God
The word majesty comes from a Latin word meaning greatness. The word greatness is attributed to God 39 times in the Bible. This word, when applied to God, is always a declaration of His greatness and serves as an invitation to worship.
Today, great stress is placed on the idea that God is personal. He is! But that can leave the impression that He is just personal in the same way we are. But we are imperfect, flawed, and He is not. He is perfect and without limit. He has us in His name, but we do not have Him in ours! He is personal, but unlike us, He is Almighty. How can we form a right understanding of God’s greatness?
- Remove any concept of God that limits Him
- Psalm 139 reveals to us God’s greatness (Majesty)
- His knowledge of us (Psalm 139:1-4)
- His presence (Psalm 139:7-12)
- His work of creation (Psalm 139:13-16)
- Psalm 139 reveals to us God’s greatness (Majesty)
- Compare Him with everything we call great
- Compare Him to what we do (Isaiah 40:12-14)
- Compare Him to the nations (Isaiah 40:15-22)
- Nations are nothing
- Yet He sits over the circle of the Earth
- It’s His footstool
- Compare Him to the stars (Isaiah 40:26)
Now the question. What is significant to me about the greatness of God?
- God doesn’t turn away from us (Isaiah 40:27)
- He is never too tired (Isaiah 40:28)
- He is not limited in wisdom and power (Isaiah 40:28)
- He is our strength (Isaiah 40:29)
All of this calls us to bow down and proclaim His Majesty and worship Him.
