One of the darkest experiences in human history is the day we celebrate today.
Think of the awful things that happened that day. After a false arrest on a Thursday night, on Friday, there were false accusations, an illegal trial, one declared innocent being ridiculed, beaten, denied, made a public spectacle, and killed. What can possibly be good about a day like that? There are several things that we consider that make this day Good Friday.
- This day demonstrates God’s love
- It is the greatest love (John 15:3)
- It is a voluntary act (John 10:17)
- The day marks the breaking of sin’s power
- Sin keeps us from fellowship with God
- The veil in the temple being torn symbolizes the removal of the separation (Matthew 27:51)
- Jesus’ substitution work was completed (John 19:30)
- Sin can be forgiven (Luke 23:43)
- Sin keeps us from fellowship with God
- Friday does not end the story
- There was a remembrance of a promise (Matthew 27:63)
- We celebrate Friday and call it Good Friday because we remember that Sunday is coming
Therefore, we have every reason to call today Good Friday. We call it good because, despite all the evil that was done, the plan of God was completed. We have a way to live in hope, for Jesus died for us that we might have life.
