What We Should Know About God

Psalm 93

It is no secret that we live in a world that is constantly changing. Some of those changes we enjoy, such as the change of seasons for most of us New Englanders. Some changes disturb and distress us, such as several things taking place in our world, both nationally and internationally.

Today, I want to draw your attention to something we can take great comfort in, and which is a source of rich blessing. In this changing, chaotic world, we have a God that is steadfast and unchanging. There are some things about our unchanging God that we need to remember.

  • God’s life never changes
    • God is eternal (Psalm 93:2)
    • He alone has immortality (I Timothy 6:16)
    • He neither gains strength and wisdom nor loses strength and wisdom
  • God’s character never changes
    • In contrast, we see how we change
      • Tastes
      • Outlook
      • Tempererament
      • Understanding
    • He is the same yesterday, today, and forever
  • God’s actions never change
    • God deals with us in the same way, no matter what period
      • A rebellious Jonah – mercy
      • Faithful Abraham – blessing
      • Sinful nation – judgement
    • God is always just in what He does (Numbers 23:19)
      • He was just when he allowed a sinful nation to be captured
      • He was just when He chose to free them
    • God’s purposes never change
      • His purpose is to create a family to love
      • His purpose is to prepare and

JJ Packer, in his book Knowing God, wrote, “What He (God) does in times, He planned in eternity, and all He planned in eternity He carries out in time. And all He has committed Himself to do will infallibly be done.”

Now, after considering these several things about God, what difference does it make to you and me today?

  • He will always be here
  • We can always know our standing with Him
  • He doesn’t change His mind
  • God’s plan will be fulfilled for our ultimate blessing
