Never Alone

Psalm 103:1-14

“Please help me! I’ve tried to believe in God all my life, but if someone doesn’t help me soon, I am going to lose my mind. That is, what’s left of it. I’ve prayed and prayed, but it seems that God has never heard me.”

Does this sound familiar? Have you ever heard words to this effect, or perhaps felt this way yourself?

Fear and anxiety grip the hearts of more of us than we can possibly know. Fear of failure at work, in our faith, fear for loved ones, fear of being forsaken by God, or fear of being eternally lost.

Deep within our hearts, we know that these fears are wrong. We know that anxiety and worry are sins to the extent that they involve a lack of trust in God. But where is the believer who has never sinned?

Through all of these turbulent fears, we hear the voice of the Savior say, “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Suddenly, we come to realize that we are not alone, for there is the help of the One who never leaves us alone.

God has promised us, in every realm of life, to provide for our needs.

  • He is our shield (Psalm 90)
    • Refuge
    • Fortress
  • He is our strength (Psalm 121)
    • Our help is in God
    • He who called the earth into being is the God who works on our behalf
  • He is our security (I Peter 5:7)
    • “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

If it is true that Christians sin, it is true. (I John 1:8) Then we ought not to be surprised to find that in the Christian life, on occasion, we become nervous, jittery, anxious, and filled with fear, for these human emotions are weights of the flesh from which even the most devout believer is never entirely freed.

But what do we do on such occasions? We cast all our cares upon Him. Cares literally translates to anxiety.

No, Christian friend, don’t despair when these fears overwhelm you. Don’t fear that God has forsaken you. He is saying, “You are never alone, cast your anxiety upon me.”
