Getting to Know God

Genesis 1:24-31

“What is the chief end of man?” A Cathechism teacher asked her class. The quick response from one child was, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and ENDURE Him forever.”

This is an all-too-common view of God. He is someone who should be glorified, but the process is one of enduring difficulty.

Our God is not so, and for us to experience the correct answer to the question, to glorify God and ENJOY Him forever, we need to get to know God. We will use the vehicle of the Old Testament names of God to show us His nature.

One of the names of God is Elohim. This word is used of God in the Old Testament some 2,000 times, and in the chapter of our reading today, it appears 35 times as Creation is explained. This word expresses to us that our God is faithful.

  • God is faithful to Himself
    • He will not contradict His purpose
      • God has a plan, and He will not act to defeat that plan
      • God has a purpose, and He will see that purpose fulfilled
  • God is faithful to His creation
    • Though His creation fell through sin, He had a plan for restoration
    • That plan will yet be completed, Revelation 21 tells us of it
  • God is faithful to the creatures He has created
    • God keeps His promises
      • Rainbow
    • With man’s rebellion, God could have wiped out His creation and started over, but He provided a plan for redemption instead because He is faithful to His creatures

This shows God is faithful, and it shows us we can trust Him. Let’s glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
