God’s Promise Book

Genesis 12:1-3

We serve a God who has made many promises to His people over the span of millennia. We call these promises prophecy, for it is the promise of something to come.

Today, I want us to think about the promises God made to His people concerning the coming of the one who would be called Messiah, and how the Scriptures show those promises fulfilled.

  • The promise of God to bring blessing through Abraham
    • The promise (Genesis 12:2-3)
      • Abraham’s blessing
      • The blessing to all the earth
    • God’s promise fulfilled (Matthew 1:1 & 1:17)
      • Jesus brought a difference in the lives of millions from His birth to today. This will continue until He returns
  • The promise of the place of Jesus’ birth
  • The promise of the Messiah’s coming from Egypt

What is the significance of all of this?

  • It shows a wonderful plan that God carried out over a long period to give us the benefit of His blessing.
  • It shows us that God can be depended upon to keep His word.
  • It shows us that Jesus Christ’s coming met God’s requirement for man to have a provider for our salvation.

The importance of checking out God’s promises is that we may see the promises God made and how intricately He keeps His promises. This, in turn, gives you and me the confidence to trust Him to be just as faithful to the promises that remain to be fulfilled.

God miraculously brought a line of descendants from Abraham that would produce a person who would complete the promise of God to Abraham.

There were times when it seemed the lineage would be broken

  • Abraham and Sarah were barren
    • Birth of Isaac
    • The sacrifice
  • David’s life was threatened by Saul before he married and fathered children

Yet, God’s promises were fulfilled as we see in Matthew 1.
