Co-laborers in Christ

Exodus 17:8-16

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, he was writing to a people who were divided in their loyalties. They were divided over who they would follow: Paul, Apollos, Cephas, etc.

To bring these people of diverse loyalty to the place where they could function as one in Christ, Paul reminds them in I Corinthians 3:9, “We are God’s fellow workers.”

Today, you and I are beginning a relationship that is designed to cause us to work together for many years in the future, unless time shall come to an end by the return of Jesus Christ. It is imperative that we not only have a good beginning, but that our association continues to be one that God can bless by great accomplishments for His glory. Therefore, we need to be reminded, even as Paul reminded the Corinthians, that we are God’s fellow workers. As fellow workers, each of us is needed.

Our Scripture related to us today is how a great battle could be won. It was won because everybody had something to do, and they did it. Because of the evidence supplied in this incident, we can understand that every person is needed in the great work to which we are called together.

  • Because of the adversary we face
    • Moses faced Amalek
      • The Amalekites were descendants of Esau, who lost his birthright to his brother, Jacob. This was the beginning of bad blood between the two nations.
        • The Amalekites’ strategy was to sneak around the rear flank and destroy the weak and defenseless
    • Our adversary
      • Let it never be misunderstood who we are waging war against in our work. We are working against the power of Satan.
        • He is awesome like a roaring lion (I Peter 5:8)
        • He is persistent
        • He is powerful
    • All of this requires our cooperative labors
      • A house divided against itself cannot stand
  • Every person is needed in this great work because of the way God works
    • God works through His people
    • He works by equipping us for specific work
      • Joshua could be a general
      • Moses could pray
      • Aaron and Hur could hold up Moses’ hands

Who was most important? No one! Every person was needed. Have you ever said, “Well, all I can do is pray?” You are in good company. That’s all Moses could do.

“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matthew 21:22

  • Every person is needed in this great work because of the nature of God’s work
    • God’s work is reconciliation
    • He uses many people to work in different ways to accomplish His will

Therefore, we can see today that every one of us is needed in this great work to which we are called. We are needed because we are God’s fellow workers upon whom He is depending to get His work done.
