Cause for Confidence

Psalm 27

To show that every believer has reason to put their confident trust in the Lord.

In Canada, plans were underway to widen the street of a town. To do so, it was necessary to cut trees that lined the street. As the crew went to work, they discovered in one tree a nest with a robin sitting on it along with three robin eggs. The foreman ordered the tree to be left for a while. Coming back sometime later, it was discovered the nest was empty. The eggs had hatched and the young birds now able to fly had left the nest.

When the tree was cut, one of the workmen saved the nest. Upon careful examination, he found a card that had come from a Sunday School lesson. Printed on the card was “We trust in the Lord our God”.

This reminds us of Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount which declare though the bird doesn’t spin, he is cared for by the Heavenly Father.

Today’s Scripture sets forth for us the truth as believers, we have every reason to place our confidence in the Lord. There are several pertinent facts outlined in Psalm 27.

  • The Lord is our security (Psalm 27:1-3)
    • He is our defender
      • Satan would accuse us and defeat us
      • Some people would see us destroyed
    • Nothing will happen to us without it passing through the permissive will of God
      • Job – God allowed everything that happened to Job
  • The Lord is our shelter (Psalm 27:4-6)
    • He shelters us from many of the attacks against us
      • David was pursued for a long time by a jealous King Saul
      • David found shelter in the Lord
    • God will ultimately vindicate His own
      • David knew the day could come when he could sing in victory
  • The Lord is our strength (Psalm 27:7-14)
    • He never forsakes
      • Even when our most precious loved ones forsake, He doesn’t
    • He sometimes allows us to go through great struggles, but He is always there
      • David’s confidence (Psalm 27:13)
      • Therefore, we wait for the Lord (Psalm 27:14)

These words of sacred Scripture show us clearly that we have every reason to put our confidence in the Lord.
