Knowing God as Our Shepherd

Knowing God as Our Shepherd

Psalm 23

Through a consideration of the name of God, Jehovah Roi, we can understand more fully the concept of God as our Shepherd.

There are many ways in which God has chosen to reveal Himself both in the Scriptures and in our daily life experience. He has given us the privilege to know Him for several reasons. He wants us to be able to enjoy the relationship with Him for which we were created. He desires us to know Him as the God who loves us and whom we can love in response to that love, and also so we may be able to serve His purpose on this earth.

We are becoming better acquainted with God by understanding the significance of His many names. Today we consider Jehovah Roi, God my shepherd. In this, we will see how God meets us as our shepherd to provide for our needs. We will look at two comparative Scriptures, Psalm 23 and John 10.

  • As our provider
    • Psalm 23:1
      • Materially
      • Spiritually
      • Always in a loving manner
    • John 10:3-5
      • Shows a personal provision
      • As a leader of His own
  • As our protector
    • Psalm 23:4-5
      • Protects from the perils without
    • John 10:7-11
      • Protects from the perils without – as a door
      • Protects from the perils within – as Savior
  • As our promoter
    • Psalm 23:6
      • He promotes an atmosphere for growth
      • Confidence in the future

Therefore, from the truths in God’s Word, we see Him as our great shepherd who provides for our needs, giving us all we need, protecting us against the evils we encounter so we are spared many of the onslaughts of the devil, and promotes a way in which we can grow daily in our walk with Him.
