II Thessalonians 3

After having reminded the people once again about the events that will precede the return of our Lord to this earth, Paul continues to give a final word of encouragement to Thessalonica.

  • The confidence faith produces (II Thessalonians 3:1-5)
    • They were partners in the Gospel
      • He seeks their prayer support (II Thessalonians 3:1-2)
        • For the rapid spread of the Message of the Lord
          • Like a runner with all obstacles removed
        • That people of evil intent would be hindered from their work
          • In Corinth (Acts 18: 5-6 & 12)
    • They were faithful (II Thessalonians 3:3-5)
      • They had their problems
      • The Lord would be faithful to them
      • They would persevere (II Thessalonians 3:5)
        • God’s love
        • Christ’s perseverance
  • The command concerning the unruly (II Thessalonians 3:6-12)
    • There a particular problem they faced – idleness
      • Paul had addressed it before (I Thessalonians 4:11)
      • The product of idleness is
        • Gossip
        • Troublemaking
        • Living off the church
      • Paul had been gentle in his first letter but apparently, they did not heed his example or his advice
        • This may have been because of their wrong ideas about the Lord’s return
    • Withdrawal from fellowship (II Thessalonians 3:6)
      • Not excommunicating or denouncing but simply do not share the joy of fellowship
    • Follow a rule (II Thessalonians 3:7-11)
      • Paul had exemplified a work ethic (2 Corinthians 11:9)
      • No work results in no food
    • The command to the unruly (II Thessalonians 3:12)
    • The attitude toward the unruly (II Thessalonians 3:13-16)
      • Don’t be discouraged
      • Be persistent
      • See him as a brother in need
        • Be ready to renew the fellowship
