Study of Acts – Acts 27

Acts 27

Back in Acts 23:11 God made a promise to Paul “Take courage for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome”. The remainder of the books of Acts is a testimony of God’s faithfulness in doing exactly what He declared to Paul that He would do. There would be some perilous times, but we will see how God is true to His word.

  • The uttermost parts of the earth
    • Paul’s travels to Rome
      • Paul’s traveling companions (Acts 27:1-3)
        • Luke, his physician and scribe
        • Aristarcus, his attendant, from Thessalonica
        • Julius, the Centurion
        • Other prisoners
          • Some may have appealed to Caesar
          • Some may have been condemned and were being sent to the games of the Gladiators
      • Difficulty in traveling (Acts 27:4-6)
        • Taking protective measures
      • Paul’s warning (Acts 27:9-10)
        • Why wasn’t Paul’s advice heeded?
          • The centurion believed his master and did not listen to Paul
        • The consequences (Acts 27:11-20)
          • The storm (Acts 27:14)
            • Tempestuous – root word is typhoon
          • Extreme measures (Acts 27:16-20)
            • Securing the ships
            • Lightening the load
      • Paul’s counsel (Acts 27:21-26)
        • A rebuke (Acts 27:21)
        • A reassurance (Acts 27:22-26)
        • Why were Paul’s words heeded after the fact?
      • Seeking land (Acts 27:27-37)
        • A conspiracy defeated (Acts 27:30-32)
        • Encouragement (Acts 27:33-37)
      • Shipwreck (Acts 27:39-44)

This is the first part of the trip to Rome, but there is strong evidence of God’s faithfulness in keeping His word to Paul.

  • He had protected the party even when the advice Paul gave which came from Him was not heeded
  • He had given Paul insight as to actions that needed to be taken as well as things not to do
  • The result was safety to all on board in spite of the loss of the ship
