Study of Acts – Acts 22

Acts 22

We last saw Paul and his associates arrive in Jerusalem just in time for the Feast of Passover where Paul completed his Nazarite vow along with four other men. Paul was then arrested under false charges.

  • The uttermost parts of the earth
    • Paul’s arrest and the consequences (Acts 21:37-22:30)
      • Paul was granted the privilege to speak to the crowd (Acts 21:37-40)
        • There was confusion by the commander of the guard as to whom Paul was
        • There was a man from Egypt who had stirred up insurrection in the city, claiming to be a prophet in 54 A.D. The belief was that Paul was this man
        • Paul clearly gives his credentials (Acts 21:39)
        • He is permitted to speak (Acts 21:40)
      • Paul shares the witness of his conversion (Acts 22:1-21)
        • Paul demonstrates the components of an effective testimony
          • Who I am (Acts 22:3)
          • My experience (Acts 22:4-5)
          • What happened to bring change (Acts 22:6-16)
          • How those changes have helped me (Acts 22:17-21)
      • The crowd responds (Acts 22:22-24a)
        • Away with such a man… he is not to live
      • The guard’s response (Acts 22:24b)
        • Roman law forbade any magistrate from inflicting any punishment upon a Roman citizen before he had a trial and was condemned
      • Paul is released to be questioned by the Sanhedrin
        • Released for fear of reprisal because they had arrested a Roman citizen
        • Released to the Sanhedrin out of curiosity about who Paul really was
