Study of Acts 9:32 – 10

Acts 9:32 – 10

We have thus far studied Jesus’ Great Commission to His followers (Acts 1:8) and have followed the expansion according to Jesus’ formula of Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria. Now we look to the final section which encompasses the remaining part of this book of Acts.

  • The witness to the ends of the Earth (Acts 9:32 – 28:31)
    • Miracles carried out by Peter (Acts 9:32-43)
      • The healing of Aeneas (Acts 9:32-35)
        • Observe the person by which Peter declared him healed (Acts 9:34)
        • The result (Acts 9:35)
      • Dorcas restored to life (Acts 9:36-43)
        • Observe the geography of where Peter’s work is being carried out
          • We are still in Phase 2 of the Great Commission – Judea and Samaria
        • Dorcas is restored in answer to prayer (Acts 9:40)
          • The result (Acts 9:42)

Chapter 10 marks a transition point in the book of Acts and in the life and work of the church. To this point the scattered Christians were preaching the Gospel only to Jewish people (Acts 11:19). We shall see a very clear change from this point onward.

  • Peter’s enlightenment (Acts 10:1-48)
    • God speaks to a Gentile (Acts 10:1-8)
      • Cornelius is Italian (Acts 10:1-2)
      • He was a God-fearer much like the Ethiopian
      • Cornelius’ vision (Acts 10:3-8)
        • Send for a man named Peter
        • Receives instruction how to find him
        • He is faithful (Acts 10:7-8)
    • God speaks to Peter (Acts 10:9-33)
      • Observe Peter’s activity (Acts 10:9)
      • His vision (Acts 10:10-16)
        • The animals are mixed: clean and unclean
        • Peter is repulsed (Acts 10:14)
        • Why this reaction (Leviticus 11:1-23)
      • Cornelius’ messengers arrive (Acts 10:17-23)
      • Peter at Cornelius’ house (Acts 10:24-33)
        • He understands the vision (Acts 10:28-29)
        • The request (Acts 10:33)
      • Peter speaks God’s message (Acts 10:34-48)
        • His message (Acts 10:34-43)
          • His new awareness (Acts 10:34-35)
          • God’s plan (Acts 10:36-41)
          • The power of the plan (Acts 10:42-43)
        • God pours out His Holy Spirit (Acts 10:44-48)
          • The Jews see the Gentiles receive the Holy Spirit

What do we learn from this?

  • God is not a respecter of persons
  • Our nationality is neither a hindrance or an advantage
  • Salvation is to ALL who call upon the Lord
