Our Helper

John 16:7-15

To show through an analysis of the Holy Spirit’s purpose, person, and performance to expose the wonderful benefits we experience.

Every person at some point in their life needs someone to come to their aid. Probably, if we were given an opportunity, there would be many incidents cited of such experiences in our lives. Doubtless, some of these may be heroic. The wonderful news is that we have such help.

We come now to the statement in the Apostles’ Creed which states, “I believe in the Holy Spirit”. We will discover that one of the very important roles of the Holy Spirit is to be the helper that we need, not just in adverse situations, but in ALL of our life.

An analysis of the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit will give us an awareness of the rich benefits we have because of His work in our lives.

  • The purpose of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16)
    • One like Himself
      • Jesus assured His followers that another one of the same kind would come to their aid
      • His purpose would be to carry on God’s work after Jesus’ ascension
    • A helper
      • Greek word is paraclete meaning advocate
      • In a broader sense, to give encouragement, counsel, or strengthen
  • The person of the Holy Spirit
    • He is divine (Acts 5:34)
    • He is personal
      • He speaks
        • To Philip (Acts 8:29)
        • To Peter (Acts 10:11)
        • To Barnabas and Saul (Acts 13:2)
      • He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30)
  • The performance of the Holy Spirit
    • To glorify Christ (John 16:7-15)
    • To enlighten (Ephesians 1:17)
    • Regenerate (John 3:5-8)
    • Sanctify (Galatians 5:16-18)
    • Empower for service (I Corinthians 12:4-11)
    • Teach (John 14:16)
    • Intercede (Romans 8:26-27)

Since we see all the beneficial things that the Holy Spirit provides to us, we can first rejoice and then take care that we do not in any way hinder His work in our lives.
