Promises from God – Guidance

Proverbs 3:1-6

To show through this Scripture that every person can benefit from the promises of God’s guidance.

Guidance

British shoppers who are tired of spending hours searching for an elusive item in the store are receiving help from satellite technology, originally designed to help the United States military. A product designer is equipping a shopping cart with global positioning system (GPS) to guide shoppers to their products. The device mounts on the handle of the cart and will guide shoppers by showing arrows on a screen directing the person to the correct shelf. In addition to helping shoppers find the items they need, the device will suggest recipes, mention special offers, and even work out a route through the store.

The designer, Murray Laidlaw, says, “Lots of people just don’t shop in a methodical manner. The device will make trips less confusing and time-consuming.” Laidlaw has been given a government grant to build the GPS shopping cart and hopes to have a prototype working within a few months.

Oh, if there was only a GPS guidance system for life – something to guide us, tell us which way to turn, how to live. Wait a minute, come to think of it, there is. Not a system that guides us by Global Positioning Satellites, but one that guides us by God’s Holy Spirit.

Send me your light and your faithful care,
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.

Psalm 43:3

The Bible has been called God’s Promise Book. And so it is, for we find promises that God has given us that we can claim and anticipate that He will carry out.

Some of God’s promises are conditional, that is God promises to do certain things conditioned on our response to Him. Other promises are given without condition. He will just simply do what He has said without anything further.

Last week we looked at a promise: God will always care for you. Today we see in Scripture God’s assurance that He will guide us. It shows us that by following the prescriptions set forth, every one of us can benefit from God’s promise to guide us.

  • God precepts (Proverbs 3:1-2)
    • Get acquainted with God’s instructions to us
    • Remember them
    • Follow them (Proverbs 3:3)
  • God’s promises (Proverbs 3:4)
    • He does not forsake us
      • Psalm 23
      • Psalm 121
    • God deals in truth
      • Trust it!
    • God’s providence
      • If He promises to provide, we can yield to His will
      • He can overrule in the affairs of our life
        • If we are truly desirous to follow God’s ways we can start on the course we understand to be His plan, with the assurance that He can alter that course if it is not what He wanted for us, and what would be best.

Therefore, we can see from this Scripture that there is always benefit in the guidance of God.
