Critical Confrontations that Count – Belief

To show through Jesus’ interview with Nicodemus what it is to be born again.

John 3:1-17

John chapter three records an interview that took place between Jesus and Nicodemus. Let’s look into this exchange in depth.

Nicodemus was

  • A Pharisee
  • A member of the council
  • An official in the Synagogue

His purpose was to find answers to some questions.

As we look into this experience, we are enabled to see what it is to be born again. This is revealed by:

  • The Declaration (John 3:3)
    • A requirement
      • Unless… he cannot
    • A Spiritual experience
      • Not physical.
        • Can he physically enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born again?
      • Spiritual experience
        • Not visible except by the results
          • The wind is an example we can’t see it, but we can feel it and witness its effects
        • The results
          • New identity
          • New ideas
          • New ideals
  • The Design (John 3:10)
    • As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so, must the Son of Man be lifted up
      • The example
        • People rebelled against God
        • God dealt with it by sending serpents
        • Many died
        • Moses instructed to put a serpent on a pole
        • Those who looked in obedience lived
      • Jesus’ explanation
        • He would be lifted up on the cross
        • Belief in him would mean deliverance
          • I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father but by me. John 14:6
  • The Destiny
    • Whoever believes in me shall not perish but have eternal life.
      • Belief = eternal life
      • God’s purpose
        • God’s design is to save
        • God’s design is not to condemn
